JULIETTE BINOCHE

Date of Birth: March 9, 1964

Born in Paris, France, this daughter of an actress and a sculptor was only 23 when she first attracted the attention of international film critics with Philip Kaufman's The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988).

Binoche studied acting at the National School of Dramatic Art of Paris. Following graduation, she followed in her mother's footsteps and became a stage actress, occasionally taking small parts in French feature films.

She began an affair with the young filmmaker, Leos Carax. She appeared in his film Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (The Lovers on the Bridge) (1991), a film that took four years to make due to poor funding. After filming Damage (1992) with Jeremy Irons, she and Carax separated. She went on to act in a handful of films including Wuthering Heights (1992) and Three Colors: Blue (1993), for which she won a variety of Best Actress awards and nominations.

After a sabbatical from filmmaking to have her son, Raphael, in 1993 with Andrew Halle, a professional scuba diver, Binoche was selected to portray the heroine of France's most expensive ($35 million) movie ever: Le Hussard sur le toit (strongB>The Horseman on the Roof) (1995). In 1996, she earned further international recognition with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar (as well as a host of other awards) for her role as Hana in The English Patient.

She returned to her native soil to film her next few projects including Un Divan a New York (1996), Alice et Martin (1998) and Chocolat (2000), for which she received her third Golden Globe nomination (the first two were for Trois couleurs: Bleu and The English Patient). Iin 2000, she gave birth to her second child, daughter Hannah, whose father is actor Benoît Magimel. In 2003 she received her eighth César nomination (French equivalent of Oscar) as Best Actress for her work in the film Déclage horaire (2002). However, Binoche has continued to work in English films—her most recent project is David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis (2012), which also stars Twilight hunk Robert Pattinson, Sarah Gadon and Jay Baruchel. Most recently, she starred in Clouds of Sils Maria (2015), The 33 (2015) and the sci-fi drama Ghost in the Shell (2017) with Scarlett Johansson.
