SARA CANNING

Date of Birth: July 14, 1987

Sara Canning was born in Gander, Newfoundland to Wayne and Daphne Canning. When she was 11, Sara moved to Sherwood Park, Alberta. She began figure skating during her adolescence and persisted with it for 11 years. It wasn’t until she attended F.R Haythorne Junior High School that she became interested in acting. When she went to Bev Facey High School, she appeared in several of their stage productions and acted in shows at Festival Place in her hometown.

Her first professional role came at the age of 18 when she starred in a stage adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984. Shortly thereafter, she attended the University of Alberta for general arts. In 2006, aged 19, she moved to Vancouver to study screen acting at the Vancouver Film School. She graduated the next year and began looking for roles in the city, juggling auditions with waitressing.

Her first roles came in TV movies and series, including 2008’s Paparazzi Princess: The Paris Hilton Story, playing Nicky Hilton. She followed that with guest appearances on Smallville and Kyle XY. Her big break came in 2009, when she starred in a pilot for The Vampire Diaries. The pilot was picked up, and she was a regular cast member for two seasons. The show has gone on to become one of The CW Television Network’s most successful series ever. Following her time at The Vampire Diaries, she starred in Primeval: New World, a Canadian adaptation of a UK series. She would star in all 13 episodes.

In the romantic-comedy The Right Kind of Wrong, she co-starred with True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten as the object of his affection, and Catherine O’Hara. The film had a gala screening at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. More recently, she starred alongside Aaron Ashmore in the Canadian indie film, I Put a Hit on You (2015).
